Small Town Christmas

December 13th, 2010

It seems like all the books I have picked for this Christmas Spirit challenge have been great so far.  And this one is no different.

Debbie Macomber packs her usual laughter and smiles into the wonderful book.  There are two stories of Christmases in small towns.

The first story, Return To Promise, takes place in Promise, Texas.  Jane had grown up in California and was a city girl all her life.  At least until she met Cal Patterson that is.  She walked away from city life and found a loving community until now.  Cal’s past has come back to haunt him.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t see anything wrong.  So now he is upset with his wife for seeing trouble where there isn’t any.  Is there really trouble in paradise?  Is Nicole out to steal Cal from Jane or is Jane just buckling under the stress of dealing with her father’s cancer?  Debbie Macomber really packs a punch with this story.  She will have you angry, laughing, crying, and every other emotion in between.  The real question of the story is whether or not Cal can keep his family together for Christmas?

The second story, Mail-Order Bride, takes place in Gold River, Alaska.  This is one of Debbie Macomber stories that will have you laughing until your sides hurt.  Caroline’s great aunts are romantic schemers.  When Caroline’s fiancé dumps her right before the big day, Caroline heads into a deep depression.  This would definitely not do.  Her great aunts just couldn’t let her stay down in the dumps.  While drinking some of their “special” tea that they brew, one of them stumbles upon an ad in the newspaper from a man in Alaska asking for someone to be his bride.  The aunts quickly answer the ad and send Caroline on a much needed “vacation”.  Completely unaware of the real reason she is on her way to Alaska, she starts to relax in hopes of just getting away from it all.  Her aunts pack her a special thermos of their home brewed “special” tea, which she drinks in its entirety before reaching Alaska.  The only downside to this story is that her aunts aren’t in it more.  I really like those two women.  I am hoping that they might pop up in some of her other stories.

This book is definitely worth the read.

Hi :) beautiful blog and love this review. I am just about to begin 'Christmas Letters' by Debbie Macomber and it seems that she is going to be a favorite of mine. I like her humor too. 'Small Town Christmas' sounds nice. Happy Holidays!

My coder is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using WordPress on a number of websites for about a year and am worried about switching to another platform. I have heard good things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress posts into it? Any kind of help would be really appreciated!

One thing I’d really like to say is the fact that car insurance cancellations is a dreadful experience so if you’re doing the best things as being a driver you simply won’t get one. Many people do obtain notice that they’ve been officially dropped by their own insurance company and several have to scramble to get more insurance following a cancellation. Low-priced auto insurance rates tend to be hard to get after having a cancellation. Having the main reasons with regard to auto insurance cancellation can help motorists prevent losing one of the most crucial privileges obtainable. Thanks for the ideas shared by your blog.

Thanks a lot for the helpful posting. It is also my belief that mesothelioma has an incredibly long latency period of time, which means that indication of the disease might not emerge until finally 30 to 50 years after the original exposure to mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma, which is the most common form and has effects on the area within the lungs, might result in shortness of breath, chest muscles pains, and also a persistent cough, which may produce coughing up maintain.
